Q: DO YOU GUYS SHARPEN KNIVES?

A: Yes. DC Sharp offers sharpening services on a walk-in basis at Union Market (1309 5th St NE, DC, 20002) during the following hours:

Tuesday-Friday 11am-7pm

Sat-Sun 10am-7pm

  

Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SHARPEN A KNIFE?

A: Sharpening costs on average between $11.75-$18.75 per knife for hand sharpening. We can only provide an accurate price quote after examining the knife in person. Damaged blades increase the cost of our service. Click here for detailed prices.

 

Q: DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

A: Service is offered on a first-come-first-serve basis; we cannot offer appointments.

 

Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

A: Your wait-time will depend upon the size of the queue when you arrive. Average turn-around time is 1-2 hours for basic sharpening.

  • Repair work can take up to 1 week. 
  • Large orders (5 or more pieces) require at least 72 hours.
  • Wait-times during November and December are considerably longer.

 

Q: HOW DO I TRANSPORT MY KNIVES?

A: Most people wrap them in a kitchen towel and place them in a bag.

 

Q: DO YOU SHARPEN SERRATED KNIVES?

A: We can sharpen bread knives and "tomato" knives. We cannot sharpen blades with "micro" serrated edges.

 

Q: HOW DO I KNOW IF MY KNIVES ARE WORTH SHARPENING?

A: Ask us when you come in. We will give you an honest assessment. 

 

Q: DO YOU SHARPEN SCISSORS?

A: Yes, as long as the blades can be easily separated. 

 

Q: DO YOU SHARPEN GARDEN TOOLS?

A: Yes, and if you disassemble the tool yourself and bring in the blade only, it will cost you half as much.

 

Q: DO YOU SELL KNIVES?

A: We specialize in hand-crafted, high-performance kitchen knives. Our selection changes regularly and the selection in our store is wider than that on our website. We strongly recommend visiting our shop and handling the knives in person prior to purchase.

 

Q: WHY WON'T YOU ANSWER THE PHONE?

A: Union Market is very noisy, so it is difficult to hear the phone.  We don't take calls on Mondays because we are off.

Q: DO YOU DO RESTORATIONS?

A: We welcome restoration projects on a case-by-case basis. Please bring your piece in for a consultation.

 

Q: DO YOU BUY USED KNIVES?

A: We only consider buying rare pieces that we cannot purchase from the maker.
